A 2006 Golden Shower Studios Retrospective Blog Part 1
Hello everyone. I would like to start this off by thanking you all for your continued support of our production company. Golden Shower Studios just celebrated it’s 9th anniversary, and with the new year come and gone, I thought it would be fitting to recap what an extraordinary year 2006 was for us.
Our first project of the year was Star Track: Episode 16. In all honesty, this episode was the one that gave us the confidence to try new things. An off the wall story that panned out well was a surprise to everyone. I can still remember when editing was complete on this project. Dev (Smock) and I were at the computer and we watched the whole episode. We immediately turned to each other and decided to watch it again. This episode proved that we were able to expand upon our characters and develop the Star Track universe.
Upon completing this episode, we took our usual 2 week break. Except for me. I write, edit, direct and do as much as I can for this show, so when I noticed how well episode 16 went over, I was motivated to up the ante.
Out of the blue, Star Track veteran Ryan Kingsbury (Rhian of the Romulan, Romulan empire) called me and expressed his admiration for episode 16. He wanted back in. This opened up a door for our show, and in all honesty lessened my conundrum. I was milling over various story possibilities. Should the Idomo go back in time? Should Klang come back? It wasn’t easy, until Ryan called.
With Ryan signed on, the story wrote itself for me. Ryan is back. But he died in episode 7! This is 10 episodes later! Then I remembered that we had an invaluable character at our disposal! Why not use the Insane Geneticist from episode 14!
I started writing feverously. Ideas were coming to me like losing hockey games come to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Then it dawned on me. This episode had to be epic. A cliffhanger to end all cliffhangers. A random message posted in my message boards by Joe Chittle sparked the idea. Bring back Klang. Klang had been killed in episode 15, and his brother had been sent to the same penal colony as the Insane Geneticist. Hmmm…a little convenient? I didn’t even realize it until then.
The epic story panned out, Rhian was cloned, as was Klang. Rhian attacked the Idomo and Klang senselessly destroyed a Romulan planet, sparking an interstellar war!
Enter Erik Kuras (our CGI artist). His first trial was to make a Klingon Bird of Prey destroying a planet. The effect was well received, and Erik seemed to enter a different realm of CGI from this point on. The episode ended subsequently ending our 4th season of Star Track. We planned a summer break but what followed was unexpected….
Stay tuned for Part 2 of 2006 A Retrospective Blog!
